Penobscot Fly Fishers gear up for big month

The Penobscot Fly Fishers club has a busy January schedule on tap, as club members will be gearing up for a pair of big events.

First, the regular monthly meeting for the club will be held Jan. 5 at the Coach House Restaurant in Brewer at 6 p.m.

The meeting will feature a presentation from Ron Carr. Carr will talk about his extended fishing trip in Alaska.

On Jan. 6, the club’s popular beginning fly-tying class will begin. The class, which is limited to 24 members, usually fills up fast. The class will be held at the Bangor Recreation and Parks building on Main Street, and all equipment and material will be supplied for the students. Call Don Corey at 843-5634 for more information.

Finally, the club will host its first Cabin Fever Reliever on the weekend of Jan. 29-30 at the Old Town YMCA.

The two-day free seminar is an offshoot of the club’s traditional fly-fishing symposium, and will run in conjunction with Old Town Canoe’s annual factory boat sale.

A variety of speakers, exhibitors and lecturers are on tap for the show.

Turkey deadline approaches

The application deadline for hunters interested in hunting wild turkeys is fast approaching.

The state’s application deadline is Jan. 14, and only hunters whose names are drawn will be allowed to hunt.

The 2005 split-session turkey season will run from May 2 through June 4. All juniors hoping to take part in the state’s Youth Turkey Day also should apply, as they must have a permit to take advantage of that opportunity.
