Polar Bears rip ‘Cats

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College, the No. 2-ranked Div. III women’s basketball team in the country, ran its home winning streak to 48 games by downing No. 9 Bates 67-48 Friday night.

Marisa Berne scored 17 points to pace the Polar Bears, Vanessa Russell added 13, and Eileen Flaherty had 11. Justine Pouravelis grabbed 10 rebounds and made six steals.

Olivia Zurek powered the Bobcats of Lewiston with 18 points and 13 rebounds. It was their first loss this season.

At Waterville, Regina Wohl scored 16 points as the White Mules upset the Jumbos. Wohl’s 3-pointer with 2:28 left put Colby ahead for good.

Tonya Rosbash added 11 points and four steals for Colby, and Kathleen Kimball had eight rebounds and six assists.

Valerie Krah paced Tufts of Medford, Mass., with 16 points.

At Lewiston, former Maranacook High School star Brian Gerrity lit Bowdoin up for 24 points on 56.3 percent shooting to lead Bates to the win in both teams’ NESCAC league opener.

Rob Stockwell had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Andrew Hippert led the Polar Bears of Brunswick with 12 points.

At Medford, Mass., Reggie Stovell led the Tufts Jumbos with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Drew Kaklamanos and Jake Weitzen scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Tufts while David Shepherd chipped in with 10.

Colby’s Andrew Jenkins led everyone with 20 points. Pat McGowan had 13 points and Drew Cohen, added 11 plus seven boards. Nick Farrell scored 10 points.
