Colby’s Nickerson wins silver medal Senior finishes second in giant slalom at FIS World University Games

Warner Nickerson of Colby College in Waterville earned a silver medal for the United States on Wednesday in the FIS World University Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

Nickerson, a senior All-American from Tilton, N.H., finished second in the giant slalom, posting a two-run time of 1 minute, 59.85 seconds in a field of 115 skiers.

Austria’s Dominik Schweiger edged Nickerson in 1:59.79 to take the gold medal.

Nickerson, who finished fourth in Sunday’s Super G event and placed ninth in Saturday’s downhill race, will complete the competition Friday when he races in the slalom.

Nickerson is among six male skiers representing the United States at the event.

USM to honor Ed Flaherty

The University of Southern Maine will honor baseball coach Ed Flaherty in recognition of his induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The school has planned a dinner and awards program for Saturday, Jan. 29, at Verrillo’s Convention Center in Westbrook.

The evening begins with a social hour, light refreshments and a cash bar from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by the program from 8 to 9.

Flaherty was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame based on his tremendous credentials. In 19 seasons, his Huskies have compiled a 569-241-3 overall record.

USM has made 16 trips to the NCAA Division III national tournament, earning six regional titles and two national championships. Flaherty has been named ABCA New England Coach of the Year three times and Little East Conference Coach of the Year on three occasions.
