BOSTON – Old Town High School junior Cassie Hintz, who has the nation’s top high school time for 2 miles (10 minutes, 40.94 seconds), came within three seconds of breaking the national high school 5,000-meter record at the Terrier Invitational Saturday.

Running against college and club athletes, Hintz finished eighth overall in 16:45.84 at the Boston University Track and Tennis Pavillion. The national 5K record is held by Brianna Jackucewicz (16:43.02), set at last year’s National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York.

Another Maine athlete fared well, also. University of Maine senior Jeff Caron was 33rd in the 3,000-meter run (8:31.30), a race won by Mark Carroll in 7:46.60. He was followed by Alan Webb in 7:47.19.
