Madawaska man remains hospitalized

VAN BUREN – A Madawaska man remained hospitalized Friday recovering from injuries sustained last Saturday when a motorcycle he was operating collided with a police cruiser on Route 1 near Van Buren.

Guy Cyr, 43, said Friday he has had surgery to repair his left leg, and more surgery is scheduled. Cyr was airlifted to the Eastern Maine Medical Center last weekend after receiving medical care at both the Cary Medical Center at Caribou and The Aroostook Medical Center at Presque Isle.

Cyr said he was in pain and heavily sedated. He expected more surgery, possibly as early as next week.

Maine State Police Trooper Steve Stubbs, accident investigator, was unavailable Friday. He said earlier in the week the investigation was continuing.

Van Buren Police Chief Jeff Mechalko said Friday that the investigation was continuing by the state police. He said Police Officer Ryan Nicolas was still on the job Friday, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The original report said Nicolas was heading north on Route 1and that Cyr was heading south on his motorcycle. With Cyr on the motorcycle were his wife, Stacey Cyr, 30, and their son. Stacey Cyr and the child sustained only minor injuries.

Nicolas made a “three-point” turn backing up in the opposite lane to change direction and collided with Cyr.
