The Franciscan brothers who operate the Friars’ Bakehouse in downtown Bangor have asked Christians to begin making a Lenten sacrifice on Ash Wednesday to support the work of the spirit in Haiti. On Jan. 30, they unveiled their sacrificial giving program at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bangor, and they will be making a similar presentation at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Brewer. The friars spent two weeks in Gros Marne, Haiti, in November. They stayed with Archdeacon Noe Bernier, who visited Maine in June. The Episcopal Diocese of Maine and the Episcopal Church of Haiti have been associated since 2000. In their recent mission to Haiti, the brothers took $8,000 in contributions directly to Bernier. The brothers outlined how far $250 a year or 68 cents a day would go in Haiti: $150 per year to educate a child, $40 a year for textbooks, $60 a year to feed a child a mean on each school day.
