Dexter’s Ames sets mark Standout center breaks school’s scoring record

DEXTER – Ashley Ames scored 29 points, breaking the Tigers’ all-time scoring mark of 1,572 points, to power the Dexter girls basketball team to a 68-33 victory over Penquis Tuesday night in high school action.

Ames, a 6-foot-4 senior center, broke a record set in 2003 by Travis Patterson. She now 1,581 career points.

Her sister, Mallory Ames, netted 14 points and Sabrina Cote 10 added for the Tigers.

Kate Hamlin led the Patriots of Milo with 17 points and Mindy Dolley added 10.

At Millar Arena in Houlton, Josh Stewart scored the game-winning goal 1:08 into overtime as the Minutemen rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second period.

Stewart finished with two goals for 1-12-1 Stearns. Shawn Michaud, Derek McGillicuddy and Josh Harmon each chipped in with a goal and Jay Kim made 24 saves on 28 shots.

Zac Greenier knocked in three goals for the 5-9 Crusaders of Bangor. Josh Hunnefeld scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Nate Kuneman stopped 10 of 15 shots.

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Erik St. Peter scored the second of his two goals late in the third period to lift the Wildcats to the win.

Brad Baker and Ben McPherson added a goal apiece and Brandon Berube two assists for 8-5-2 Presque Isle. Brendon Esquibel made 21 saves on 24 shots.

Derek Smith notched two goals and Brad Bellemare one for the 4-8 Poines. Adam Conway had two assists and Jon Cattell stopped 29 out of 33 shots.
