The fifth annual Chocolate Fling, to benefit Washington County Children’s Program, moves to a larger location this year, reports program board President Kim Bagley and Vice President Jane Weil.

The fling begins with a delicious array of chocolate treats served from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in Carter’s Banquet Hall behind Helen’s Restaurant in Machias.

As the hall is cleared, The Old Timer’s Band will play for your dancing pleasure from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Bagley and Weil wrote that the band “has quite a following throughout Washington County,” and they are looking forward “to having them help us celebrate the valentine season and raise money for WCCP.”

Tickets for the Chocolate Fling are $5 per person and you can eat desserts there or take them home. Tickets for the dance are $8 for singles, or $15 for couples.

For those attending both events, the cost is $12 for singles and $23 for couples.

WCCP is still graciously accepting dessert donations.

“We welcome others who like to bake to make a dessert for us for the Fling,” the women wrote.

Owner Janet Sawyer and staff of Circles, The Salon, hosts its second annual Locks of Love Day 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at The Salon, 13 Somerset Plaza in Pittsfield.

Free haircuts will be provided for those who are willing to donate their hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces for children who have experienced total hair loss.

More than 1,000 children have been helped by the organization since it was founded in 1997.

Donated hair must be at least 10 inches in length.

All SAD 22 pupils in grades three, four and five, and their parents or guardians are invited to attend the Parent-Child Valentine’s Day Dance from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, in the Hampden Academy cafeteria.

Tickets are $5 each, and parents or guardians must accompany their children. Tickets will be available at the door.

Sponsored by the Hampden Academy sophomore class, its treasurer Ashley Cole of Hampden reports that refreshments will be provided and prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.

Amber Lovell of the American Cancer Society office in Topsham reports volunteers are needed in the Bangor area to assist with the society’s annual Daffodil Days fund-raiser.

Volunteers are asked only to give as much time as they can, knowing that money raised helps provide funds for research, education, advocacy, patient services and programs to assist cancer patients in our communities.

Charles and Vanessa Koch wrote to thank everyone who helped them during their son’s recent illness.

They report that Andrew Koch received a liver transplant Jan. 12 at Boston Children’s Hospital “and is doing remarkably well.”

“He is home already, and is expected to make a full recovery,” they wrote.

The couple especially thanks those who helped seal their house before winter, as they were in the midst of “a badly timed addition project” when their son became ill.

Donations of time and money from many people enabled the house to be weatherproofed in a weekend, and “freed us up to spend our time concentrating on Andy,” they wrote.

“This was a tremendous stress reliever and we are grateful beyond words for the help.”

They particularly thank Old Town Canoe and Keith Trembly Builders for their generosity in providing manpower and material for the project, as well as the individual donors and families who helped.

“Thank you all,” they wrote. “God Bless, and remember organ donations save lives.”
