Southern Maine wins twice

The University of Southern Maine earned two Little East Conference victories over the weekend, downing Rhode Island College 90-51 on Saturday in Gorham, then posting an 87-62 win Sunday over Eastern Connecticut at Willimantic.

On Sunday, Ashley Marble tossed in 22 points and Tiffany Jones notched 19 as the Huskies rolled. Katie Sibley provided 15 points and Megan Myles 14 for USM.

Lindsey Marsmarski led Eastern Connecticut with 12 points.

On Saturday, Myles scored 18 points to spark the Huskies. Marble posted eight points and 11 rebounds.

Women’s hockey

Maine drops pair to UNH

At Orono, the University of Maine women’s hockey team was swept by No. 8 New Hampshire over the weekend, losing 5-2 Saturday and 5-0 Sunday.

On Saturday, Stephanie Jones scored two goals for the Wildcats. Nicole Hekle and Leah Craig each had a goal plus an assist. Taylor Palareti also had a goal and Melissa Bourdon had 34 saves on 36 shots.

Sonia Corriveau and Andrea Staranko scored for the Black Bears and Tristan Desmet added an assist. Rachel Gettings stopped 13 of 18 shots.

On Sunday, Jones and Palreti each netted two goals as UNH upped its mark to 19-5-4.

Craig notched a goal plus an assist for the ‘Cats and Bourdon made 28 saves on 28 shots for the shutout.

Gettings had 23 saves on 28 shots for 12-11-3 Maine.

UMFK earns weekend sweep

At Fort Kent, the Bengals earned back-to-back Sunrise Conference victories, beating the College of St. Joseph 74-70 on Saturday before downing Lyndon State 97-84 on Sunday.

On Sunday, Bartas Samaitis poured in 29 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to pace the Bengals. Derrick Cooper connected for 27 points and Shawn Caron added 10.

UMFK made 42 of 55 free throws (76 percent).

Kevin Trask piled up 29 points for Lyndon State of Lyndonville, Vt.

In Saturday’s game, Billy Russo tallied 18 points and snatched 24 rebounds to lead the Bengals. Derrick Cooper scored 20 points and Darius Parker posted 11.

Southern Maine falls twice

The University of Southern Maine of Gorham dropped two weekend games, losing 93-74 to Rhode Island College on Saturday in Gorham, then dropping an 80-73 decision to Eastern Connecticut on Sunday at Willimantic, Conn.
