Two face charges after Greenville crash

GREENVILLE – Two men were charged Thursday after a motor vehicle accident on Shoals Road.

Justin Curtis, 32, of Gardiner was charged with unauthorized use of property, and Shawn Hembree, 31, of Augusta was charged with failure to report a motor vehicle accident. The two are expected to make their initial court appearances on March 7 in 13th District Court in Dover-Foxcroft.

A Dresden man also may be charged with assault pending further investigation, Greenville Police Chief Duane Alexander said Thursday.

Alexander said the three men late Wednesday night visited the Stress Free Moose, where one of them allegedly assaulted a bar employee. The trio then went to Whiskey Cove, where they reportedly became disruptive and then left for a local camp where they were staying.

Instead of the Sandy Bay Road, where the camp is located, the men accidentally took the Shoals Road, which ends in about a 6-foot drop. Because the road was icy, the driver could not stop his 1997 Chevrolet truck and it slid off the road, destroying the truck, Alexander said. The truck was owned by Hembree.

After the 1 a.m. accident, one of the men asked a nearby camp owner for assistance, but the camp owner was unable to help, according to the police chief.

Alexander said Curtis then allegedly took a snowmobile from a resident’s lawn and took the men to their camp about two miles away.

Officers investigating the accident found the snowmobile at the camp. Wardens from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife assisted local police.
