The Harris family will be well-represented when the Lee Academy boys and girls basketball teams take the Bangor Auditorium floor today in their Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinals.
On the girls side, cousins Karin Bird, Kerri Harris, and Brooke Harris all play for the Pandas, while Tom Bird, Karin’s brother, plays for the Lee boys.
The connections go deeper: Randy Harris, Brooke Harris’ father – Tom Bird’s uncle – coaches the Panda boys and was the interim girls coach last year.
Randy Harris, his brother Mark Harris (Kerri’s father), and another aunt, Julie (Harris) Bullock played for the Pandas when they attended Lee, as did Tom and Karin Bird’s sister Kristin, Kerri’s sister Katie, and Kerri’s mom, Gayle (Perry Harris).
Tom, Kristin, and Karin Bird are related through their mother, Lorrie, who is Mark and Randy Harris’ sister.
The matriarch of the family is Lavon Harris, 86, who lives in Bangor and plans to watch both No. 1-ranked teams Monday. The 18-0 Lee girls will face No. 9 Greater Houlton Christian at 3:35 p.m., while the 13-5 Lee boys will take on No. 9 Jonesport-Beals at 8:35 p.m.
Kerri, Brooke, and Karin were all at the Bangor Auditorium Saturday night to watch other Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinals.
“A lot of the times we get to see the family is when they come to watch us play basketball,” said Brooke Harris, who is a freshman along with Karin Bird.
“Basketball’s like our family reunion,” added Kerri Harris, who is a junior.
