Freeport has sweep of Class C ski titles

The Freeport High School boys and girls went from second and third, respectively, last year to champions this season as the Falcons won the state Class C skiing championships over the weekend.

Competition involved four events (slalom, giant slalom, freestyle and classical) over a three-day period at Black Mountain in Rumford and Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry.

Freeport’s girls finished with a final scored of 196 and ended a five-year title run by Madawaska, which finished 61 points behind as runner-up. Livermore Falls’ Whitney McDaniel wound up with a score of 71 to beat out Jessica Ayotte of Madawaska by nine points for the skimeister award. Ayotte tied for skimeister last year.

The Freeport boys scored 175 and finished 26 ahead of Madawaska, which was third last year. The Falcons were paced by skimeister Dan Sandberg, who edged teammate Nick Martin by a single point (38 to 39) for the honor. Kyle Taylor from Central Aroostook of Mars Hill was third at 78.

In Saturday’s Nordic competitions, Justine Cyr of Fort Kent finished first in the girls race with a time of 16 minutes, 39.9 seconds. Freeport’s Lucy Garrec was second at 16:48.4 and Madawaska’s Megan Toussaint third at 16:51.1. Hilary McNamee of Fort Kent was fourth (16:56.2) and Courtney Martin of John Bapst in Bangor was fifth (17:24.7).
