Camden Hills fans got a scare early in the second quarter of Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class B boys championship game when senior point guard Jamey Davis took a spill in the lane and stayed down for a couple of minutes.

He eventually walked off the court on his own power.

“I went up in the air, maybe I was a little out of control and got too high, and I got undercut and just hit the side of my head on the floor,” said Davis, who finished with 16 points, five assists and three steals. “I was out of it for a little bit, maybe for a couple of seconds, but our trainer took me out back and did a little test and I was all right.

“I was just dizzy. I knew it wasn’t anything serious. It was just a matter of getting my focus back.”

Davis missed about three minutes of game time before returning to action.

“I just waited for the trainer to say let’s get him back in there, he’s OK,” said Camden Hills coach Jeff Hart. “Jamey wanted to go back in earlier, but I thought we really stepped it up while he was out, and when he came back he had a lot of open floor to work with and just made some tremendous passes.”

Camden Hills got a big lift during Davis’ absence from senior guard David Pike, who helped the Windjammers go on an 11-0 run to turn a 25-19 deficit into a 30-25 lead – a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Pike had a three-point play in the middle of the run, which began with a 3-point jumper and a scoop shot by senior forward Tim Stammen and was capped off by a three-point play by Cameron Puls.

“David’s been tremendous coming off the bench for us all year, accepting that role as a senior and enjoying it,” said Camden Hills coach Jeff Hart. “He’s got a high basketball IQ, and studies the game when he’s on the bench. He knows what needs to be done, and he came in ready to play.”

KVAC B continues its roll

Saturday’s victory by Camden Hills in the Eastern B boys basketball final extends the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference’s domination of the division.

KVAC teams have won every Eastern B title since 2000, and each year the champion has gone on to win the state championship.

Camden Hills (2001 and 2002), Winslow (2003) and Erskine Academy of South China (2004) have brought home the gold ball to the conference in the new century.

The last time a non-KVAC team won the Eastern B crown was in 2000, when Hermon won the regional championship before losing to Gorham in the state final.

Since then, Gorham has lost three of the last four state finals, in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

Gorham will meet Camden Hills for the 2005 title in Augusta next Saturday night.
