Cheney sparks UMaine

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Brittany Cheney slammed a two-run home run to lift the University of Maine to a 6-4 softball victory over Yale Monday for its second win of the day.

It was the first home run of the season for the Black Bears, now 4-7.

In its first game, Maine beat La Salle 8-7.

Jess Brady added to the Maine attack in the second game with a two-run triple.

Brady also sparked the Bears in the first game with four stolen bases and a single. Amy Kuhl and Cheney each chipped in with an RBI single.

St. Joseph’s wins two

At Cape Coral, Fla., the St. Joseph’s College Monks successfully opened their season with a 4-3 victory over Simmons and an 11-8 win over Emmanuel.

In the first game, Helene Liaci slammed a two-run home run in the first as well as scoring the winning run for St. Joe’s.

Anne Hennigan led Simmons with a two-run double, while Ann Talarico had an RBI triple.

In the second game, Liaci again led the Monks with a home run and triple. Megan Farrell singled and doubled.

Nicole Little had three RBIs for Emmanuel.

At St. Petersburg, Fla., Derek McIntosh and Charlie Furbush each hit their first homer of the season and Steve Lambert shut the door, giving up only one hit over six scoreless innings.

McIntosh led the Monks, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Andy Exley, Andy Wood and Nick Arno had two hits apiece. Furbush and Mark Clapp each added two RBIs.

Matt Herbert had the only hit for Wisconsin Lutheran.

At St. Petersburg, Fla., Blake Bullis’ grand slam in a 10-run fourth inning powered the College of N.J. by the Eagles of Bangor.

Justin Spencer paced Husson with two singles and an RBI. Billy Kane chipped in with an RBI triple and Sean Brawn doubled.

Indoor track

Souviney eighth in pentathlon

At Boston, the University of Maine men’s and women’s track teams concluded their indoor seasons over the weekend, with the men competing at the ECAC Championships at Boston University and the women at the IC4A Championships at Northeastern.

Hana Pelletier of Belgrade sparked the women with a 15th-place finish in the prelims of the 800 run with a time of 2 minutes, 12.47 seconds. Katie Souviney of East Vassalboro earned eighth in the pentathlon with 3,274 points.

For the men, Mike Lansing wound up 13th in the 3,000 (8:21.93) while Jeff Caron of Auburn was 20th in 8:40.93. Paul Rupprecht was 20th in the mile (4:21.98). Scott O’Connor and Donny Drake of Portland finished 15th and 17th in the 800 with times of 1:53.65 and 1:53.71, respectively. South Berwick’s Anthony Morgan threw 16.49 meters in the weight throw, good for 17th place.
