Swimmer of the meet

OLD TOWN – Jacob Shanley, a junior at Old Town High School, earned the Maine Interscholastic Swimming League George Crimmons Swimmer of the Meet Award at the Boys Class B High School Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 22 at the University of Maine.

Shanley, who has been swimming with the Canoe City Swim Club since he was 8 years old, won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54:37, just shy of the 1994 record, and clinched the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 2:03.20. His 50.24 swim in the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay added to the fast times of teammates Jeffrey Dow, Erlend Rismyhr and Gerald Herlihy, giving the team a big win in the event with a time of 3:35.98. Zach Gasaway and Adam Boynton are the coaches.

Arm wrestling challenge

BANGOR – United Bikers of Maine will sponsor an arm-wrestling challenge open to the public on Saturday, March 19, at Top Spot Billiards, 1211 Broadway. Weigh-in time is 1:30-3 p.m. Tourney action begins at 3:15 p.m. and is open to men and women contestants. Entry fee is $5. Admission fee for spectators is $1. Women’s self-defense

VEAZIE – The Eastern Maine School of Self-Defense will offer a women’s self-defense workshop at 10 a.m. March 20. The workshop is free. Reservations are required. Call 990-0330.
