Stammen a finalist for Mr. Basketball Forward led Camden Hills to ‘B’ title

BANGOR – For Tim Stammen, nothing beats winning a state championship in your senior year.

“Our core group of seniors, we’ve been playing all the way up and when we started winning tournaments it was like a dream come true,” said Stammen, a 6-foot-3 forward for Camden Hills of Rockport. “We saw the ’99 boys win it for the first time since 1974, and since then it was our goal.”

Being a finalist in your senior year for the Mr. Maine Basketball Award? That’s a close second.

Stammen was introduced as a Mr. Basketball finalist Wednesday afternoon at a press conference at Husson College.

He joins Gorham’s Ben Thayer and Portland’s Tyler Emmons in the final group contending for the state’s top senior basketball award, which will be announced at a banquet March 25.

The finalists for Miss Maine Basketball are Dirigo of Dixfield’s Alexa Kaubris, Cony of Augusta’s Katie Rollins, and South Portland’s Whitney Morrow.

Camden Hills coach Jeff Hart, who is president of the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches, accompanied Stammen on Wednesday.

“To me he epitomizes the high school student-athlete,” Hart said. “He does all the things right in school every day and there’s no one more deserving.”

The Mr. and Miss Basketball awards go to the top senior players in the state and are decided initially by a vote of coaches from across the state and then narrowed down by a committee of coaches and media members.

Hart announced the rest of the top vote-getters for Mr. and Miss Basketball, as well as the McDonald’s senior all-star teams, all-academic honorees, and regional free-throw shooting champions.

The all-star games, which are in their 25th year, will be held March 26 at Husson starting with the C/D girls game at 10 a.m. The C/D boys game follows at 11:25, then the A/B girls at 12:50 p.m., and the A/B boys at 2:15.

The free-throw champion will be decided starting at 9 a.m.

Bangor’s Aaron Gallant, who was named to the boys East A/B all-star team, saw his season end abruptly Saturday when the No. 1 Rams lost to No. 9 Hampden Academy in the quarterfinals, but he’s eager to take part in the all-star activities.

“It’s not like winning a state championship, but it’s good to help out the community and play one last game to top off my career,” said Gallant, who attended the press conference Wednesday along with Bangor and all-star teammate Jordan Heath.

Sixty-five high schools are represented by the senior all-stars, academic honorees, and free-throw champions.

Tickets to the games are $5 and net proceeds benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine. This is the 17th year McDonald’s has sponsored the games.
