Charleston meeting postponed by storm

CHARLESTON – The annual town meeting scheduled for today has been postponed until Saturday, March 19, because of the anticipated snowstorm.

Residents will decide whether to withdraw from SAD 68 and whether they want town officials to explore a voucher plan for school attendance, among other matters.

The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Charleston School building.

Ever since SAD 68 directors voted to close the town’s small elementary school, town officials and some residents have worked to reopen the school to serve the town’s elementary school-age children. Withdrawal papers have been filed with the Department of Education and work has been done to correct structural problems at the school identified by the district in anticipation of its reopening.

Town officials are waiting for Education Commissioner Susan Gendron’s decision about whether the building can be re-opened as an elementary school.

Residents on March 19 also will decide whether to appropriate $8,500 to pay for utilities at the school building and to appropriate $5,000 for further repairs to the building. That work would include installation of a foundation drain, repairs to the entrance, and work on expansion tanks and water closets.

In other business, residents will elect a selectman, a SAD 68 director, three assessors, three overseers of the poor, a fire chief and two recreation committee members.
