News in brief ST. ALBANS: POLICE SEARCH FOR MAN LINKED TO ASSAULT

Police have issued a statewide bulletin for a man involved in a domestic assault late Friday. Carl Smith, 49, likely is on his way back to his home state of Virginia, said Deputy Wilfred Dodge on Saturday. “If we don’t find him by Monday, I’ll issue an arrest warrant for assault with a deadly weapon,” Dodge said. The incident began as an argument when Smith and his girlfriend were breaking up at a home they shared on Corinna Road. Dodge said the woman reported that Smith took a saddle that belonged to her and put it in his car. She went to the vehicle to retrieve the saddle, and while she was standing near an open door, Smith allegedly put the car in reverse. The move knocked the woman down and dragged her about 15 feet. She was taken by private vehicle to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for treatment. Dodge said several Maine State Police troopers searched the area, but it is believed Smith is headed to Virginia. He had been living in St. Albans since December, said the deputy. Smith is described as a black male, about 160 pounds, driving an older-model white Buick. He has a shotgun and a handgun in his possession, Dodge said, but did not threaten anyone with the guns. Anyone with information regarding Smith’s whereabouts may call the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department at 474-9591. (Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN)
