Wellington residents to weigh change in dates of fiscal year

WELLINGTON – Residents will be asked today at the annual town meeting to change the fiscal year from Jan. 1-Dec. 31 to July 1-June 30 to better align it with the state budget process.

Town meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the town office.

If residents approve the fiscal year change, an additional transitional six-month tax assessment would be required, according to town officials.

They are recommending that the article be approved and that a committee be formed to develop a plan with alternatives to reach that goal. Those alternatives would be voted on by residents at a special town meeting to be held later this year.

A winter road contract will be decided by residents. Selectmen and the budget committee are recommending that an extension of three years be approved with the existing contractor, but the two boards differ on the amount of the yearly increase in the proposed contract.

The West Road Riders Snowmobile Club Inc. has requested the use of the town’s total state reimbursement from snowmobile registrations, but selectmen and the budget committee are recommending a fixed donation instead.

On the 41-article warrant, residents will be asked to raise $5,000 to renovate the town office to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Elections will include a town clerk, three selectmen, an SAD 4 director, road commissioner, town treasurer, tax collector, excise tax collector and sexton.
