Bangor seminary names new academic dean

Bangor – The Rev. Dr. Ansley Coe Throckmorton, president of Bangor Theological Seminary, has announced the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Oscar E. Remick as academic dean at Bangor Theological Seminary, effective in July.

“Dr. Remick is exceptionally well-qualified for this office by virtue of his long experience in both school and church,” Throckmorton said.

Remick is a native of Ellsworth. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern College, a bachelor’s degree in divinity from Eastern Theological Seminary, a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral degree from Boston University graduate school.

His field of study has been philosophy and philosophy of religion. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and has done advanced study at Andover Newton and Harvard Divinity Schools, Harvard University, Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University. He has held Fulbright grants for graduate studies in Heidelberg University and for study in India, and studied in Israel and Egypt.

Since returning to Maine, Remick has taught in the department of philosophy at the University of Maine and served as adjunct professor at Bangor Theological Seminary. He will continue in these roles while serving as dean.

“My involvement in the life of the seminary has given me a deep respect for its mission, the faculty and the students,” Remick said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to join with President-elect Dr. Imes in building on the achievement of President Throckmorton and Dean Sue Davies as well as those who preceded them. We are compelled to provide students with a firm grounding in the heritage of faith so they can be compassionately ecumenical as religious leaders in an age of globalism.”
