The Maine Public Utilities Commission building on State Street was awarded a federal “Energy Star” label Tuesday for its environmental sustainability. The building uses 35 percent less energy than a comparably sized office, preventing the annual emission of more than 1.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas, which plays a major role in global climate change, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Maine is one of six states nationally to pursue the Energy Star certification.
