There are some special people among our readers who should be proud of themselves after participating in the Healthy Hancock’s Lose and Win program.

Iris Simon of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth reports a Celebration of Success was held recently for those folks at Mount Desert Island High School Auditorium.

As they entered the building, they passed two Volkswagen Beetles parked at the entrance to the school, filled with “passengers,” she wrote, to give participants “a visual idea of the total amount of weight lost by the 51 teams during the 10-week program,” and that was: 3,287 pounds.

The Laurie Jones Band entertained and special recognition was given to the Downeast Treads, who had the largest number of team members attend each weekly meeting.

Honored as outstanding team captains were Garry and Rosemary Levin of the Schoodic Slims.

Teams honored for averaging a loss of more than 15 pounds per member were Finally I’m Thin, Downsizers 11, Waisting A-Weigh and The Otis Optimists.

Four individuals were recognized for losing more than 30 pounds each, and recognition was given to groups that formed teams within their organizations.

Hannaford in Ellsworth had three teams, which lost a total of 233 pounds, and three teams from Kids Peace in Ellsworth lost a total of 198 pounds.

The two teams from Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor lost a total of 232 pounds, and three from School Union 98 in Bar Harbor lost 147 pounds.

The three teams of First Congregational Church in Ellsworth lost a total of 289 pounds, and the five teams at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth lost 273 pounds.

Simon reports that representatives of Healthy Hancock “will keep in touch with the team captains through the coming year,” and that “many of the teams have plans, in place, to continue their challenge the next 42 weeks.”

With members of the Lose and Win Committee already planning for Lose and Win 2006, I extend my sincerest and heartiest congratulations to this year’s participants, and wish you well in your continuing efforts to be part of a Healthy Hancock.

Judy Gamble and members of the Hampden Academy Boosters Club, which works to close revenue shortages in the school’s sports budget, invite you to attend the Hampden Academy Annual Sports Auction beginning with a preview at 5 p.m. and the auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Hampden Academy old gymnasium.

Among items up for bid are three bronze sculptures by Academy alumnus Forest Hart, an Otter kayak, a Guide canoe, pearl necklaces, hotel stays, a bicycle, and gift certificates for shops and restaurants. The fund-raiser also will feature a silent auction and delicious desserts.

It’s not too late for you to contribute to, or at all too late for you to plan to attend, the First United Methodist Church Silent Auction-Dessert Social.

That free event is 7-9 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the church, 703 Essex St. in Bangor.

Welcome contributions can include household goods, movies and music, furniture, antiques, art, services from baby-sitting to lawn care, donations from local businesses, or anything you believe might interest prospective bidders.

Planners also welcome contributions of desserts for those attending the fund-raiser.

Lorraine Quiron Harvey of Eddington is secretary-treasurer of the Over 50 Brewer High School Class Reunion.

She says the summer event is Friday, Aug. 19, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.

“The purpose of this function is to raise money for scholarships for deserving graduating students” of BHS, she wrote.

Each year, more than 200 people from all over the country “come back to renew old friendships” at the reunion, she added.

And, she reminds you, attendees “do not need to have graduated with the class they started with.”

Harvey is trying to locate some “missing” alumni, and hopes you can help.

This year, celebrating its 60th reunion, BHS 1945 is the honored class, and Harvey is trying to find two members: Shirley Carruthers Osgood and Flye Emmerson.

Additionally, the Class of 1954 is invited to attend, “and we need to locate Carolyn Crane, Carroll DeBeck, Lois Grass, Bernard Grose, Ernest Kimball, Lester Reid and Mary Smith,” Harvey wrote.
