The front page of the April 12 Bangor Daily News loudly and proudly reports that Maine is No. 1 in the nation in tax burden, again. What a wonderful distinction for a state whose motto reads: “The way life should be.”
Many of us who haven’t lost our jobs have taken wage concessions, while the state government has raised taxes and fees as Bill Becker [executive director of the Maine Heritage Policy Center] points out.
Farther down on the same front page, an article states that if someone tries to sell you heating oil at $1 a gallon you should be asking them questions. You bet I’d be asking questions: “How much can I get?” and “When can I get it?”
