Milan wins 3 matches for berth in state semis

BREWER – Charles Milan III of Bangor-Brewer Bowling Lanes took another step toward his 24th state championship when he earned a berth in the semifinal round of the Maine State Candlepin Association’s singles championship.

Milan will return to B-B Lanes to face Jim Singleton of Good Time Lanes in Lisbon on Saturday at noon.

In Saturday’s other semifinal, Nate Nealey of Vacationland Lanes in Saco will meet Shawn Morrison of Bangor-Brewer.

The winners will advance to Sunday’s state championship at noon, also at the B-B Lanes.

In the women’s semifinals, Judy Bowen of the Newport Entertainment Center will face Karen Matero of Good Time Lanes in Lisbon, and Rici Justice of Augusta will go against Lee Ann Lowe of Lisbon. Those semifinals will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. with the championship Sunday at 10 a.m.

Milan, who owns B-B Lanes, advanced by beating Dave Gilbert 647-552 in the first round, Jim Pennell 623-556 in the second round, and Walt Bowden 1,265-1,198 in the quarterfinals.

Nealey, Morrison, and Singleton all had first- and second-round byes. In the quarterfinals, Nealey defeated Mike Leland 1,329-1,276, Morrison rolled past Shane Tripp 1,406-1,115, and Singleton edged Jeff McClain 1,253-1,190.

In the women’s bracket, all four top seeds advanced. Bowden beat Nancy Provincal in the quarterfinals 1,298-1,054, while Justice defeated Mona Lemar 1,268-1,013 and Lowe topped Alice Ostertag 1,208-1,063. Matero’s opponent in the quarterfinals had pulled out due to an injury.
