International Altrusa Club
The International Altrusa Club of Greater Bangor will be honored with a Proclamation from the City of Bangor on Altrusa International Awareness Day, Monday, April 25. Mayor Frank Farrington will make the presentation. A Husson international student will be the speaker for the evening.
The Altrusa Club provides community services, develops leadership, fosters international understanding, and encourages fellowship through an international network of executives and professionals in diversified career classifications.

Maine humor workshop
Maine author and teacher Sandy Phippen will present, Funny Women and Funny Men, a workshop on authentic Maine humor, at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Bangor Public Library.
The workshop, sponsored by a Maine Media Women mini-grant and the library, is open at no cost to Maine Media Women members, their guests and members of the public.
Mother’s Day sale
PICA’s marketing committee invites the public to a sale of handmade items from Carasque, El Salvador’s, sewing, embroidery and crochet co-ops. The sale is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the PICA office, 170 Park St.
Benefit gala
A gala to benefit the Maine Chapter of Children’s International Summer Villages will be held 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the United Technologies Center, 200 Hogan Road.
The evening will feature an after-dinner setting with finger foods and desserts prepared by Culinary Delights. Light entertainment will be provided by the Old Town Jazz Combo.
Information about CISV-Maine and the destinations of its 18 delegates this summer will be available. CISV is a volunteer, nonprofit organization committed to world peace through international understanding and the friendships of children and young people throughout the world.
The gala is a fund-raiser for the Summer Village to be held in Old Town this summer. Delegations of 11-year-olds from 12 countries will attend.
Tickets for the event are $100 per couple. Only 100 tickets will be sold. Ticket holders are eligible for cash drawings, including a grand prize of $1,000. Door prizes also will be awarded. Tickets may be purchased by calling 827-7129, or at the door.
Spring Dinner and Auction
The Business and Finance Club at University College of Bangor will hold a spring dinner and auction at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the College Center ballroom, 201 Texas Ave. Tickets are $10. The public is invited to attend. Call Diane Boone at 262-7863 for more information.
Grand opening
A ribbon cutting ceremony on April 20 marked the grand opening of Penquis Family Housing, 169-189 Griffin Road. The ceremony recognized the partners that made possible the 16 new units of affordable family rental housing – the Maine State Housing Authority, Northern New England Housing Investment Fund, Merrill Bank and the city of Bangor.

Ceremonies for PEO
Marlo Bradford of Bangor, Northeast District organizer for PEO, presided over organizational ceremonies for PEO Chapter K in Ellsworth.
Chapter K was formed by members from the two Bangor chapters with women from out-of-state chapters who have moved to the Ellsworth-Mount Desert Island area. It is the 11th PEO chapter in Maine.
PEO – Philanthropic Educational Organization – is affiliated with International PEO Sisterhood. It was started in 1869 as a college sorority, but was expanded to the national level to promote educational opportunities for young women.
The international sisterhood maintains an educational loan fund, owns Cottey College in Missouri, offers scholarships for international women students, provides need-based grants to women returning to school and presents scholar awards to those pursuing advanced degrees.
Officers for Chapter K are Ann Dederer, president; Emma Remick, vice president; Judy Stockbridge, corresponding secretary.
Bradley
Forest and logging museum
The Maine Forest and Logging Museum opens its 2005 season 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, with Woodsmen’s Day. The living history site at Leonard’s Mills in Bradley will be teeming with activity, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
Attractions for this year’s event include:
. Good-spirited competition between the University of Maine, Colby and Unity College woodsmen’s teams – students showing off their competitive chopping and sawing skills in an exciting series of events.
. Free STIHL Chainsaw Safety Training Class in the parking lot – exciting demonstrations of chainsaw safety brought to you by STIHL. Open to the public.
. Spring run-off powering the late 1700’s style up-and-down sawmill.
. Twitching of logs by draft horses or oxen, timber hewing with broad axes, and wood carving.
. Displays of axes and chainsaws from past to present.
. Lombard Log-Hauler, the machine that did the work of 60 horses in its day, on display.
. Authentic bean-hole beans, prepared on site, provided free of charge. Donations accepted.
There’s plenty of parking, said museum officials. Plan to pack a lunch and enjoy the event and an early outing on the facility’s nature trails.

Hampden
Senior citizen’s prom
A senior citizen’s prom will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Hampden Academy. There will be music and bingo hall. There is no charge for the event.
Concert for senior citizens
The Weatherbee School invites Hampden senior citizens to a luncheon and concert at noon Friday, May 6, at the school. Third-graders will perform.
Luncheon menu is roast pork and gravy, mashed potatoes, peas, applesauce, yeast roll and filled cookie. Those interested in attending should call 862-3254 before April 29.

Developmental screening
Child Development Services in Penobscot County will hold a free developmental screening 9 a.m.-noon Friday, May 6, at the Hermon High School pre-kindergarten room.The screening is for area 3- and 4-year-old children, and 5-year-olds not yet eligible for kindergarten. Orland
Grange Hall open house
The public is invited to attend an open house 4-7 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Victory Grange 538 in North Orland. Visitors may tour the Grange Hall, see its memorabilia and records, and learn its history.
Over the years the Grange has changed from an agricultural organization to a service organization.
