What do you do for a living?
I work in Portland. I’m an environmental scientist.
Why aren’t you fighting tonight?
The other boxer, who is Canadian, got called away by work.
Why do you box?
It’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever had. It gives me a chance to show athletic abilities and to prove women can fight.
Have you ever knocked anyone out?
I’ve had seven technical knockouts in Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont.
What do you do for fun on the weekends?
I’ve gotten lame as I’ve gotten older. My husband and I cook dinner, open a bottle of wine and watch TV.
What do you like about Maine?
The mountains and the coast.
What would you like to do once you’re done cheering your team tonight?
Have a margarita.
If you could meet any boxer in history, who would it be?
Jack Johnson. He reminds me of what females have been through and how they weren’t accepted in boxing for so long. Jack Johnson, for racial reasons, was suppressed as well.
Where do you get your boxing clothes?
My fighting gear comes from my coach and funds he gets from donations. The rest comes from TJ Maxx.
How much time to you spend working out?
Two and a half to four hours a day.
What did you think of “Million Dollar Baby”?
I liked it. My favorite boxer – Lucia Rijker – was the villain at the end.
What do you want women to know about boxing?
Regardless of whether you are a male or a female, you can do this. The sky is the limit. Women’s boxing is here to stay. Accept it.
