Orono Basketball School

ORONO – The Orono Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its summer program, the Orono Basketball School, now in its third year and open to children in grades three to nine. The school provides an opportunity for youths in the area to learn the skills of basketball in a fun, positive environment that focuses on success.

Located at Orono High School, the basketball school offers a girls’ week, June 20-24, and a boys’ week, June 27-July 1. Each week includes a morning session for students entering grades three to five and an afternoon session for those entering grades six to nine. The cost is $75.

Tim Pearson and Mike Corneil direct the Orono Basketball School. Pearson has taught physical education in the Bangor area for the past 17 years and was Maine Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2000. Corneil, of Orono, has taught, officiated and coached in the area for the last 20 years.

The two men recruit the basketball school staff from local coaches and physical education teachers who are experienced not only in basketball, but also in working with elementary and middle school age youth.

The Orono Basketball School is an active, but structured, camp where every pupil is challenged to improve basketball skills and knowledge.

Each day includes a variety of skill teaching, skill drills, contests and games. Each student participates in a detailed videotaped critique of shooting technique. Every student will take home a specific evaluation of his or her skills and abilities with suggestions for continued practice at home.
