Bangor High School’s Anthony DeRosa and Hampden Academy’s Chris Pease are looking forward to pitching for Husson College baseball coach John Winkin next season.
And Winkin is glad to have the two impressive right-handers on board.
“Take away [University of Maine-bound HA righty Pat] Moran and you’ve got two of the best of the rest,” said Winkin. “They’re going to be important next year. We lose Barrett [Dionne] and [Mike] Cowperthwaite and that’s good replacing [them] right there. And we’re going to get [Josh] Young back.
“Pease has always been strong against Bangor. He has good experience, good poise, and good size. He’s a good athlete,” Winkin added. “He got key goals in hockey. That shows it right there. So I think, as an athlete, he knows how to rise, and I feel the same way about DeRosa.
“I liked what DeRosa did last summer with us [Bangor American Legion team]. I’ve seen the one game [this spring] and I liked DeRosa’s mound poise and command of himself.”
Pease and DeRosa said Winkin had a lot to do with their decisions to attend Husson.
“I played for coach Winkin for the first time last summer and it was a great experience,” said DeRosa. “It’ll be fun playing for him this summer.”
He also said he liked the idea of staying close to home and it made sense financially.
Pease said, “I’ve talked to coach Winkin a lot and I like what he had to say. He has always treated me real well. He asked me if I wanted to come play for him and it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
UMFK trio is Aruba-bound
Former University of Maine-Fort Kent soccer players Jess Gagnon and Megan Foreman of Fort Kent will play for a Team USA Athletes International squad in a soccer tour of Aruba this summer along with current UMFK player Sara Quint of Hodgdon.
In addition to competing in the 2005 Aruba Soccer Series, they also will spend time coaching and running soccer camps for children on the island.
Sheridan lands Bowdoin post
Katie Sheridan, a 2002 Bowdoin College graduate, has been named co-coach of the Polar Bears’ women’s soccer program.
Sheridan joins John Cullen in leading the program after serving as an assistant to Cullen for the past three seasons. Bowdoin has not had a losing season in the last 14 years, and Cullen has compiled a 220-74-21 record in 19 years with the Polar Bears.
Sheridan competed in soccer, tennis, squash, and softball during her playing days at the Brunswick college.
