STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Troy Martin and Jason Weymouth combined on a seven-hit shutout Sunday afternoon as the University of Maine completed a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook with an 11-0 victory at University Field.
The Black Bears won Sunday’s first game 6-2 after the Seawolves had taken Saturday’s contest 4-0. Saturday’s second game had been postponed until Sunday.
Coach Paul Kostacopoulos’ 27-13 UMaine team improved to 10-5 in America East play and is tied with Vermont (22-14, 10-5 AE) for second place in the league standings.
In Sunday’s second game, Martin (6-2) scattered five hits with four strikeouts and no walks through 5 2/3 innings and was backed by a 16-hit attack.
Weymouth, a freshman from Charleston, allowed two hits and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Greg Creek of Chelsea paced the offense with two home runs, two singles and three RBIs. He hit a two-run homer in the fifth and a solo shot in the seventh.
Curt Smith knocked in three runs with a double and a single and Ryan Quintal posted a double, a single and two RBIs. Joe Hough doubled and singled and Joel Barrett of Brewer singled twice for the Bears.
UMaine broke a 0-0 tie in the fourth against loser Tom Koehler (2-2). Hough singled, advanced on an error and scored on Quintal’s sacrifice fly. Barrett followed with a single and scored when Aaron Izaryk doubled, moved up on the throw home and scored on a throwing error.
Robert Leonard doubled for Stony Brook (19-25, 7-8 AE), which remains in fifth place.
In Sunday’s opener, Greg Norton of South Portland spread out seven hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking three, while improving to 8-2.
Scott Robinson earned his eighth save by working 1 1/3 innings of one-hit scoreless relief.
Izaryk led UMaine with a double, two singles and an RBI. Mike Ferriggi singled twice and knocked in two runs.
Trailing 1-0, the Bears tallied four runs in the third inning off Seawolves ace Jon Lewis (4-4). Creek led with an infield single and Hough walked, but Quintal grounded into a double play.
With Creek at third, Barrett delivered a run-scoring single. Izaryk doubled home Barrett, then rode home on Smith’s double. After Matt McGraw was hit by a pitch, Ferriggi hit an RBI single to left.
Ferriggi added a run-producing single during a two-run fifth that gave Norton and Robinson more of a cushion.
Matt Devins singled twice for the Seawolves.
On Saturday, Brian Murtagh fired a six-hit shutout, striking out four without issuing a walk, as Stony Brook won.
Hough and Smith each rapped two singles for UMaine behind Steve Richard (6-1), who gave up nine hits, four earned runs and five walks in six innings. John Tesseyman pitched two hitless innings in relief.
The Seawolves scored the only run they would need in the first inning. Devins and Isidro Fortuna hit one-out singles, Nick Theoharis walked and Tom Pennino stroked an RBI single.
