Stearns? Arsenault fires no-hitter in debut

MILLINOCKET ? Junior Hillary Arsenault threw a six-inning no-hitter in her first start of the season and narrowly missed a perfect game as she allowed just one walk while striking out six to lead the Stearns Minutemen to an 11-0 softball victory over Schenck of East Millinocket Wednesday.

Casey Freeman headed up a 17-hit attack for the 4-2 Minutemen with a triple, three singles and one RBI while Jenny Powers had three singles and four RBIs. Holly Franck had a double, single, and three RBIs. Arsenault, who was making the start in place of an injured teammate, also had two singles.

Houlton 12, Caribou 6

At Houlton, Heather Haney knocked a double and two singles while driving in four runs as the host Shires rolled.

Andrea Herring had two singles and three RBIs for 4-1 Houlton. Michelle Ives singled three times and doubled while Misty Wing added two singles.

Allison Richards had an RBI single for the 1-4 Vikings.

Madawaska 8, Wisdom 4

At St. Agatha, Andrea Cyr knocked in a run with a double to lead the Owls to the win.

Beth Gerard had a double, single and RBI for 2-3 Madawaska.

Nicole St. Pierre double while Kayla Daigle doubled and singled for the 1-3 Pioneers.

GSA 14, DI-Stonington 1

At Blue Hill, Brandi Winters hit three singles and drove in three runs to lead George Stevens Academy by Deer Isle-Stonington.

Chelsea Robbins cranked a solo homer for the 6-1 winners and Amy Gellison added a two-run triple. Patty Lymburner singled twice and drove in two runs.

Heather Brewer and Anna Boyce each singled for 0-4 DI-S.

Oak Hill 4, Mount View 1

At Thorndike, Kristen Eaton slapped a two-run single to lead the Sabattus-based Oak Hill Raiders to the win.

Megan Blais had two singles, a double and RBI for the winners and Mae Nadeau had three singles.

Megan Carter, Jen Masessa and Miranda Grotten each had three singles for the Mustangs.

Presque Isle 8, Fort Kent 4

At Fort Kent, Katie Moody had two singles and two RBIs while Danielle Grenier hit three singles and plated two runs to pace the Wildcats.

Megan Pinette knocked a double and single for 4-3 Presque Isle.

Leah Babin socked a two-run single for the 1-5 Warriors and Marissa Albert notched two singles and an RBI.

Mattanawcook 6, Penquis 1

At Milo, Shannon Pietras racked up three singles and drove in a run for the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx of Lincoln in the win.

Heather Gulesian knocked an RBI single for 5-1 MA and Mallory Gates singled.

Michelle Mulherin and Kylie Palmer each singled for the 3-2 Patriots.

Jonesport-Beals 23, Woodland 17

At Jonesport-Beals, Kristi Smith drove in six runs with a double and a single and Rachel Church knocked in three more with a triple and three singles as Jonesport-Beals scored eight runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth to rally from a 17-8 deficit.

Sarah Beal had a pair of triples, a single and Jennie Durkee doubled and singled for the winners and each had an RBI.

Courtney Cochran doubled and singled and drove in three runs for 3-5 Woodland while Eryn Crowe and Heather Townsend had two singles and an RBI apiece.

Bucksport 8, Orono 0

At Orono, righthander Keeley Sullivan fired a four-hitter, striking out nine and not walking anybody, and Terren Hall hit a two-run homer as undefeated Bucksport triumphed.

Kati Hurd had a run-scoring double and Brittni Adams and Sullivan had RBI singles for the 9-0 Bucks.

Emily Balaban had two singles for 1-7 Orono with Whitney Dwyer and Sara Pavento getting the other hits, also singles.

Central 5, John Bapst 1

At Husson College in Bangor, the Red Devils scored five unearned runs to pick up the win.

Chantel Randall and Alyssa Libby each had two singles for 6-1 Central of Corinth.

Heather Laferriere and Gwen Carter had two singles apiece for the 2-4 Crusaders.

Katahdin 10, Hodgdon 6

At Stacyville, the Cougars scored five runs in the sixth to rally for the win.

Lindsay Allat hit a two-out, two-run single to give 2-4 Katahdin the lead and Felisha Robinson iced it with a two-run single of her own.

Allat added another single and a double while Robinson added another RBI single. Shelly Martin had two singles.

Sarah Brewer, Brittany Targonsky and Heather London each doubled for the 0-7 Hawks while Brianna McGary added two singles.

Fort Fairfield 7, Central Aroostook 2

At Mars Hill, Kelsey Towle had three singles and an RBI to lead the Tigers to the win.

Sheena Esancy and Kaylee Searles each had a couple of singles for 7-0 Fort Fairfield.

Alicia Rideout, Andi Long, Brittany Collins, Latisha Neece and Sami Brewer each had a single for the 1-5 Panthers.

Belfast 1, Maranacook 0

At Belfast, Stephanie Whittier came within one out of a no-hitter as Belfast earned a point-worthy victory over Maranacook of Readfield.

Both teams are now 6-2.

Whittier struck one six and walked one while yielding only a two-out single by Abby Pullen in the top of the seventh.

Belfast scored in the second as Nicole Hubbard was hit by a pitch and scored on Heather Read’s two-out double to right. Reed had two of Belfast’s three hits off Pullen, a double and a single.

Buckfield wins two

At Greenville, the Bucks won a pair against the Lakers, 7-6 and 13-5.

In the first game, Shannon Ridge had two singles, a double and an RBI to pace 5-1 Buckfield. Shayna Shackford notched two singles and a double and Tiffany Dunn two singles.

Beth Bartley and Hannah Breton each had a solo homer for the 3-3 Lakers. Beth Nystrom had a double, single and RBI.

In the second game, Lindsey Neal smacked two doubles and plated four runs to help the Bucks roll.

Dunn had two doubles, a single and an RBI while Ridge knocked in two runs with a double and a single.

Bartley hit two singles and drove in a run for Greenville. Breton doubled and Emily Fowle added two singles.

Hampden 10, Brewer 3

At Brewer, Eva Shannon had three singles and three RBIs while sister Myra had two singles and two RBIs as the Broncos rolled.

Jenna Shue had four singles and two RBIs and Erika Veinote two singles and an RBI for 7-1 Hampden.

Kate Hanlon had two singles for 5-2 Brewer.

Baseball

Presque Isle 13, Fort Kent 0

At Fort Kent, Chad Lavway had a double, a single and an RBI while Spencer King added a triple, single and four RBIs to pace unbeaten Presque Isle’s offense.

The Presque Isle Wildcats are now 7-0.

Singles by Derek Bonenfant and Adam Gendreau were the only hits for the 1-6 Warriors.

Katahdin 16, Hodgdon 3

At Stacyville, Patrick Willett doubled, singled and drove in four runs to lead the Cougars by the Hodgdon Hawks.

Joe LaBouef chipped in with two doubles and three RBIs for the 5-1 winners and Oneil Qualey doubled, singled and drove in two runs.

Jordan Quint singled twice for 0-8 Hodgdon.

Madawaska 5, Wisdom 2

At St. Agatha, Mark Sirois knocked a two-run single as the Madawaska Owls upped their record to 4-3.

Dustin Butler had an RBI single and Billy Roy two singles for Madawaska. Scott Chasse doubled and singled.

Chad Sirois hit two singles and Justin Michaud a triple for the 0-4 Pioneers. Randy Theriault had 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Caribou 5, Houlton 0

At Houlton, Devin Hersey and Josh Doucette combined on a three-hit shutout for the Vikings in the win.

Kyle Corrigan had a solo homer and single while Anthony Adams socked an RBI double and singled for Caribou. Brad Campbell notched a double and RBI single. Ryan Brewer doubled for Houlton.

Orono 5, Bucksport 2

At Orono, Dusty Thomas knocked an RBI single as the Red Riots improved to 3-5 on the year.

Mike Scott added a double for Orono.

Chris Maguire paced the 4-5 Golden Bucks with two doubles and Matt Jackson hit an RBI single.

Woodland 19, Jonesport-Beals 1

At Jonesport, Steve Newell singled three times to drive in four runs and led the visiting Dragons to a win.

Craig Moody and Carl Ripley each had two singles and two RBIs. Adam Hunt doubled to bring in two runs and Aaron Ellis had two singles and an RBI.

Joseph Libby had an RBI double for the Royals.

Mount View 11, Oak Hill 6

At Thorndike, Ben Ward singled and doubled to drive home two runs as the Mount View Mustangs earned the win over Oak Hill of Sabattus.

Kyle Harvey singled three times for two RBI. Steve Miles also singled and doubled for Mount View.

Josh Jillson singled and doubled for Oak Hill. Wally Rines and Brian Bisson each had two singles.

Machias 14, East Grand 4

At Danforth, Isaiah Roberts had a triple, two singles and three RBIs to lead the Machias Bulldogs past East Grand.

Jake Funari had two singles and three RBIs, and Andrew Austin had two singles and an RBI for the 4-5 Bulldogs. Funari also notched the complete-game win.

Micah Barnes and Nate Sixberry each hit an RBI double for the 0-6 Vikings.

Mattanawcook 16, Penquis 3

At Milo, Aaron Flannery hit a grand slam in the fourth and added an RBI single to lead the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx of Lincoln past Penquis.

D.J. Robinson had a three-run homer in the fourth, Adam Long added a three-run shot in the sixth, and Corey Kimball had three singles and three RBIs for the 4-3 Lynx.

Brian Salley hit a two-run single and added an RBI groundout for the 0-6 Patriots. Garrett Durant doubled.

Lee 15, Penobscot Valley 4

At Howland, Travis Linscott hit two doubles and knocked in three runs as the Pandas improved to 7-1 on the season.

Everett Houghton had a double, two singles and plated two runs for Lee.

Jake Crosby had a three-run triple for the 0-5 Howlers and Ryan Ware singled.

Stearns 9, Schenck 4

At Millinocket, George Surette led a 12-hit attack with a triple and two singles for the host Stearns Minutemen.

Steve Cyr had a double, single, and three RBIs for the 5-1 Minutemen. Ryan Bouchard had a double, single, and one RBI. Jordan Burleigh added a two-run single.

Jordan Pelkey hit a double and single for the 2-4 Schenck Wolverines of East Millinocket. Shawn Landry had two singles and an RBI.
