UM student paper wins 3 journalism awards

ORONO – The University of Maine’s student newspaper recently won a first place and two second place awards in regional collegiate competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Competing against other school papers from colleges and universities across the Northeast, including Yale, Penn State, Boston College and Syracuse University, The Maine Campus won first place for best all-around nondaily newspaper and a pair of second place awards for spot news and in-depth reporting for stories written in 2004.

The newspaper, published twice weekly, is managed entirely by students and operates with a staff of 30-40 students.

The first place award for best newspaper was an overall award. The spot news award was presented for the story “Bumstock Security Investigation,” written by Rick Redmond, who was news editor at the paper last year.

A team effort led to the award for in-depth reporting for a series, “Race and Diversity at UMaine,” by writers Tracy Collins, Jackie Farwell, Matt Shaer and Redmond.

A list of award winners and categories is listed on the Web at http://spj.org/region1/moe/.
