A Hampden man and his passenger lost control of the motorcycle they were riding and suffered several injuries around 2 p.m. Monday in Bangor.

According to Officer Michael Brennan of the Bangor Police Department, Matthew Gallant, 23, and his passenger, Darin Robinson, were traveling north on Main Street from Hampden into Bangor. At the railroad overpass just past the Irving fuel tanks, Robinson drove over gravel and water in the curved section and skidded off the road, striking the bridge embankment.

Gallant suffered a head injury and was bleeding considerably after the accident, while Robinson’s leg was broken. Gallant’s 2004 Honda motorcycle was a total loss. Both Gallant and Robinson were transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center. A report of their condition Monday evening was unavailable.

A Holden police officer who stopped a vehicle on Memorial Day as part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign designed to encourage seat belt use reportedly discovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the possession of the driver and passengers.

Since police cannot pull drivers over for not wearing seat belts, Officer Chris Greeley stopped a Dodge van on Route 1A for not having a front license plate. The driver and passengers were wearing their seat belts, but according to Greeley, when the driver rolled his window down the officer was “literally overwhelmed” by the smell of marijuana.

The driver, Eric Osier, 18, of Sullivan, and a passenger, Andrew Clark, 18, of Winter Harbor, were issued summonses for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. A 15-year-old passenger was issued a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia. The three were not arrested as the amounts of marijuana found were small.
