The Maine-iacs, a local road racing team captained by Newell Lewey of Orono, took first place at the Cape Breton Relays in Nova Scotia over the weekend.

The relay race is a 174-mile, 17-person relay where runners run anywhere from 7.9 to 12.4 miles per leg. The Maine-iacs, who have competed in the event 11 times and finished as high as second (2004), sent 16 runners.

Winning the first and last legs for the team was local road racing standout Evan Graves, who set a course record on the first leg, an 11.2-mile jaunt.

In between, Judson Cake, Lewey, Rick Chalmers, John Evans and Tim Wakeland would also win their legs.

Other team members included UMaine runners Adam Goode and Jeff Caron, as well as Judd Esty-Kendall, Brian Hubbell, Ted Peterson, Chris Almy, Jeremy Lisee and Karl Johnson.

Esty-Kendall and Almy are both members of the Sub 5 track club.

The event attracted 60 teams, and 60 runners competed in each race, according to Lewey.
