BANGOR – John Bapst Memorial High School Head of School Landis Green has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2005. The commencement ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, in the school auditorium.
Evelyn K. Sharkey, daughter of James and Marie Sharkey of Orono, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2005. She will study biology at Tufts University.
She is a National Merit Scholar, member of the National Honor Society, and recipient of the Society of Women Engineers Award, the Princeton Book Award, and the 2005 Maine Principals Award. She has earned high honors every quarter throughout high school and received numerous John Bapst academic awards for outstanding achievement.
Sharkey is a three-season athlete who lettered in soccer, swimming and track. She is a member of a team that holds the state record in the 4-by-400-meter relay and qualified to compete in the New England high school championships for three consecutive years, this past season capturing the state 800-meter title. She has served as captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams, soccer team and math team. She has held offices of president of Key Club, vice president of the International Club, and secretary of the National Honor Society. She has been a member of the fine arts program, earning All-State Classical Flute for two consecutive years and performing in the All Eastern Music Festival. She has earned the Distinguished Service Award for her volunteer work in the community.
Kyle J. Lad, son of Robert and Patricia Lad of Glenburn, has been named salutatorian. He will attend Dartmouth College to study liberal arts.
He is a National Merit Scholar and member of the National Honor Society. He earned honor roll status every quarter throughout high school and received numerous John Bapst academic awards for outstanding achievement. He has lettered in soccer, tennis, indoor track, track and field and math. He has served as captain of the junior varsity soccer team, co-captain of the outdoor track team, co-president of chorale, trombone section leader in band, representative on band council, and page at the Maine Democratic Convention. He has held lead roles in musical productions and plays; performed in jazz band, chamber ensemble, JB Peppers, honors band and concert choir. He earned trombone solo award at the Maine State Jazz Competitions and played with Maine District V Honors Band through high school.
Lad has earned numerous most valuable awards for contributions to the fine arts program. He has done volunteer work ranging from working with Special Olympics Program to participating in musical performances at community programs and events.
