City proclamation

The city of Bangor issued a proclamation June 13 recognizing David Mansfield, Ronald St. Pierre and James Owens for their efforts and accomplishments operating the Shawn T. Mansfield Stadium at Hayford Park, Union Street. The three were praised for their 14 years as volunteers, for promoting baseball opportunities for the youth of Bangor and for the countless hours they dedicated to the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Penquis CAP workshop

Penquis CAP Parents Are Teachers, Too will offer Boot Camp for New Dads, a free workshop for first-time, expectant fathers. The workshop will be held 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

New babies don’t come with manuals. Lots of first-time fathers have questions, such as how to hold, feed, talk or play with a baby. Boot Camp for New Dads offers first-time fathers-to-be a chance to talk with experienced dads who bring their own babies. The workshop is designed for expectant fathers whose wives or partners are in the last trimester of pregnancy.

Participation is free. Boot Camp for New Dads is funded by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health.

Maine author talk

Maine author Kathy Lynn Emerson will introduce the latest in her medieval mystery series, “Face Down Under the Banqueting Hall,” at 2 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Bangor Public Library.

The Middle Ages whodunit features Emerson’s heroine, Lady Appleton, a woman of independent mind and means, whose knowledge of herbs and healing makes her a knowledgeable expert witness when skullduggery is afoot.

In the series a suspect “fatal accident” takes place on Lady Appleton’s estate during hectic preparations for a visit from Queen Elizabeth I.

Emerson’s books will be available for purchase and autographs.

Locating child care

Summer vacation may be a kid’s delight, but it can bring child care challenges to parents. Parents who need child care in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties can turn to the Penquis CAP Child Care Resource Development Center for help in locating child care. The free service can be accessed by phone or the Internet.

The online search tool is located at www.penquiscap.org. The Resource Development Center icon is at the bottom of the page. For a basic search, enter city, ZIP code, type of care sought and age of child. A list of child care providers that match the criteria will be displayed. An advanced search also is available to locate a provider who meets more specific needs of families and-or children.

Parents may call the Resource Development Center at (888) 917-1100 or visit 262 Harlow St. in Bangor. Staff assist families in finding child care using information supplied by parents. The center provides information on the various types of child care and how to select child care; types of subsidies and-or tax credits or dependent care assistance programs available to families; and other consumer education based on the age of the child and any special circumstances.

Walk with one you love

The annual Walk With the One(s) You Love will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at Pickering Square. The route will be the same as last year and walkers will stop at the State Street bridge for a brief dedication ceremony in memory of Charlie Howard. The walk will end in West Market Square where a few brief announcements will be made.

Children’s book talk

Best-selling children’s author Glenn Murray will talk about his latest book, “Rough Weather Ahead for Walter the Farting Dog,” 7-8 p.m. Monday, July 11, at Borders.

“Walter the Farting Dog” is a children’s book series by Glenn Murray, William Kotzwinkle and Elizabeth Gundy. Murray said his goal was “to heal with laughter.”

Actor Jack Nicholson read “Walter the Farting Dog” last summer at a benefit for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Carmel

Simpson Memorial Library

The Simpson Memorial Library will sponsor an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 25, to introduce 56 new children’s books purchased with a grant from the Libri Foundation. The library raised $300 which the Libri Foundation matched two for one, allowing the library to spend $915 on children’s literature.

A special reading of Candace Fleming’s “Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!” for children from preschool age to grade three will be held at 11 a.m. on the day of the open house.

Glenburn

Fourth of July boat parade

The fifth annual Pushaw Lake boat parade will take to the water at 1 p.m. Monday, July 4, at Lakeside Landing, Pushaw Lake.

The parade is open to those who want to decorate watercraft of any size or type. The purpose of the parade is to have fun and exercise artistic creativity. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated boats, and the best decorated people and pets in the boats.

No registration is required. All boaters have to do is show up and get a number. After the judging, boats will parade in a 4-mile long loop around the central portion of the lake.

The parade will take place rain or shine unless there is thunder or dangerous water conditions.

Band concert

The Sebasticook Valley Band will give a concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at Ecotat Gardens, Route 2 and Annis Road, Hermon. Parking is available in the Annis Road parking lot. Bring a lawn chair.

Annual River Day

ORLAND – The 30th annual Orland River Day will be held Saturday, June 18. The event, said organizers, encourages families to get out and enjoy local waterways and spend a pleasant day with friends and neighbors.

. Alewife run: Canoe and kayak eco-tour from Craig Brook Hatchery to Orland Village, 8 a.m.

Plant sale at museum

Page Farm and Home Museum will hold its fourth annual plant sale, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, June 10-June 26, at the museum. Herbs and heirloom vegetables and 6- to 8-inch plants are $1.

Herb and heirloom vegetable varieties include: German thyme, common sage, mammoth dill, catnip, Italian flat-leaf parsley, flat-leaf parsley, chives, garlic chives, cilantro-coriander, echinacea, lemon balm, Korean licorice mint, hyssop, sweet marjoram, heirloom Greek oregano, bouquet dill, Colorado chile, Rio Grande hot chile, basil (sacred, Genovese sweet, cinnamon, lemon, lime, genserve, red), tomato (yellow pear, Burbank red, brandywine, heirloom, red calabash, tomato san marz), pepper (yellow perfection, Waardelo sweet, California wonder bell, Arkansas traveler, mountain), spinach, squash (yellow crook-neck, seeds of change, blue ballet), gourd, birdhouse gourd, Cocozelle bush zucchini, watermelon, pumpkin, Spanish radish, Armenian cucumber, Jersey cabbage, musk melon, radish, red cabbage, Calabrese broccoli, and lambsquarters. The event will feature annual, medicinal, culinary and everlasting plants.

All plants are grown locally from seed. Proceeds will support Page Farm and Home Museum’s heirloom gardens, and spring planting and landscaping projects.

Benefit yard sale

Kids’ toys, books, dishes and other household items are some of the items one may find at a yard sale 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 18, at St. James Episcopal Church rectory-office and Canterbury Chapel, Chapel Road and College Avenue, Orono.

The yard sale will benefit St. James Episcopal Church of Old Town and its programs, including its Fourth Friday Community Suppers, an outreach program that began 10 years ago when the Rev. Mary Ann Taylor, now retired, began her tenure.

At the suppers, community and church members gather in the church undercroft for communal dining. The menu is determined by longtime coordinators Carol and John Gregory, and the food is prepared by church members. Attendance at the suppers averages about 45. The next supper will be at 6 p.m. Friday, June 24. The menu is meatloaf, potatoes and vegetables.

Winterport

Open house

The town of Winterport and the Winterport Woman’s Club invite the public to attend an open house 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, June 20, at the Victoria Grant Civic Center, 40 Park Drive. The event will include a tour of the new facility, and explanation of guidelines for use and a discussion of suggestions for further improvement.
