PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tim Army, captain of the Providence College hockey team that reached the NCAA title game in 1985, was named coach of his alma mater, the school announced Friday.

Army, 42, replaces Paul Pooley, who stepped down earlier this month to become associate head coach at Notre Dame.

As a senior in 1985, Army helped lead the Friars to the Hockey East title and the NCAA championship game. His father, Tom, captained the 1952-53 Providence hockey team.

Army was an assistant coach at Providence from 1987 to 1993. He’s coached the American Hockey League’s Portland Pirates the past three seasons.
