BREWER – Representatives of labor, farmers and small businesses today will launch an effort aimed at reversing what organizers said is the rise of corporate giants and globalization at the expense of the local economy.
Called simply Farmer-Labor-Small Business Alliance, the fledgling organization emphasizes the importance of supporting local workers, businesses and farms, which are interconnected, Jack McKay, president of the Greater Bangor Area Central Labor Council, said Sunday.
The launching of the organization will come during a Fourth of July celebration from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at the council’s Solidarity Center, 20 Ivers St. in Brewer, just behind St. Teresa Catholic Church on South Main Street.
The event will include games for children, a chili cook-off, food, music by acclaimed union singer Joe Uehlein and comments by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Tickets are $5 for individuals and $12 for families. Proceeds will benefit laid-off workers, the center’s new heating system and the center’s Food AND Medicine program.
