UMaine-Presque Isle graduate and Eastport native Scott Hutchinson has been named the men’s track and field and cross country coach at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
Hutchinson, who was the women’s cross country and track coach at Salve Regina University (Newport, R.I.) for the past two years, replaces Bruce Bickford.
Bickford, a 1988 Olympian at 10,000 meters, resigned to pursue other opportunities. He took over the program in 2001.
In two seasons at Salve Regina Hutchinson led the women’s cross country team to a second-place finish in the 2004 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship and a third place in 2003.
Hutchinson has also coached at Babson College (Wellesley, Mass.) and UMPI. He was elected to the UMPI Hall of Fame in 2002. As an undergraduate in cross country there he was an NAIA All-New England runner and qualified for the NAIA nationals.
