BANGOR – Top-ranked Brewer and No. 2 Bangor remained unbeaten with victories Saturday at Mansfield Stadium during the second day of the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament.

Brewer eliminated No. 4 Presque Isle 17-3 in an afternoon game halted by the 10-run rule after 61/2 innings. Bangor defeated No. 3 Orono 10-5 in the late game.

Earlier in the day, No. 5 Trenton scored six runs on one hit in the bottom of the sixth inning and eliminated No. 6 Hampden 9-5.

Brewer’s Corey Cushing improved his record to 5-0 with an efficient 93-pitch complete-game performance. He struck out five, walked one and hit two batters, and shut out the Patriots over the first three innings while the Falcons’ offense was erupting for 11 runs on 11 hits.

“Corey pitched a great game against a good team,” said Brewer coach David Morris, “and when you throw strikes, play good defense and hit the baseball, good things happen.”

Kevin McAvoy’s two-run double off the center-field fence sparked a three-run rally in the first against Presque Isle’s Danny Michaud. Pat Moran delivered the key blow of a four-run second inning for the Falcons, a bases-loaded triple, and he scored on a double by Andrew Patterson.

Brewer added four runs on five hits in the third off reliever Chad Lavway. Matt Grimes had a two-run single, then McAvoy followed with an RBI single and Moran hit his second triple in as many innings to plate McAvoy and push the lead to 11-0.

Moran finished with three hits and five RBIs, while Chris Maguire had three singles and Patterson, Grimes, McAvoy, Joe Robicheau and Andrew Otis added two hits apiece, as all nine Brewer starters had at least one hit and seven different Falcons had RBIs.

Chris Parsons had three singles for Presque Isle, while Michaud doubled and singled and Logan York singled twice.

In the night game, Bangor scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth to thwart Orono’s rally from a 5-0 deficit to within 6-5.

Kyle Gallant singled home the first run, and Alex Means followed with a two-run single to center. Means scored on Brian Hackett’s double.

“A 15-year old kid [Gallant] gets a key hit, and Meansy getting a big hit, those were both important,” said Bangor coach John Winkin. “In the early part of the game I thought we failed to deliver with men on base, but we did come through when our backs were against the wall.”

Hackett finished with three hits, while Josh Young had three RBIs on a two-run double during Bangor’s three-run first inning and a groundout in the third when the Comrades added two runs to take a 5-0 lead. Scott Hackett added an RBI double in the Bangor third.

Orono rallied behind righthander Travis Bryant, who did not allow an earned run in five innings of relief.

George Keefe’s RBI single plated Cory Estes to get the Twins on the board in the fourth, and Mike Tardiff hit an infield single, went to third on an error and scored on Jacob Lukas’ groundout to cut the gap to 5-2 in the fifth.

An RBI triple by Dusty Thomas and another RBI single by Keefe made it a one-run game in the sixth.

Bangor scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but an RBI single by Jarrett Lukas in the seventh pulled Orono within 6-5. Jarrett Lukas finished with a double and two singles.

Keith Nason earned the pitching win, scattering 10 hits while striking out 11 over seven innings. Eric Anderson worked a perfect eighth and ninth to earn the save.

In the first game, Trenton was held hitless by Hampden’s Jason Huntley through five innings before extending a 2-1 lead with a six-run sixth that included five walks and a bunt single by Phineas Peake.

The Acadians added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Harrison Hines.

Hampden rallied with three runs in the eighth, two on a single by Dan Maclean, and a run in the ninth.

Collin Henry earned the win with relief help from Will Rosenthal. Henry also had a single, two walks and two runs scored, while Peake singled twice and scored twice and Hines had two RBIs.

Matt Joy had three singles to pace Hampden’s 14-hit attack. Billy Shannon and Chris Pease had two singles each.
