Police probe shooting of Brooklin man, 46

ORLAND – State police are investigating the death of a Brooklin man to determine if the gunshot wound that killed him was self-inflicted.

The deceased was identified as Brian A. Allen, 46.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Pickering of the Maine State Police said Monday that investigators are in the process of conducting interviews to find out whether the death was a suicide or a homicide.

The state medical examiner has ruled the man’s cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head.

The case was initially reported as an unattended death on Front Ridge Road in Orland on the morning of July 15. Three officers from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office responded, along with an officer from the State Police Criminal Investigation Division.

On Monday, Pickering said Allen was found in a house where his brother was staying at the time. Police recovered the gun in the same room where the body was found.

Pickering confirmed that there was some distance between the body and the weapon, but not enough to rule out a suicide. There was no note found at the scene either, he said.
