Family reunions abound on summer weekends

What do you call it when you look at vital records or church records and it’s obvious that some are missing?

You could say that “the register is very bitty,” according to English genealogist Paul Brewer. I noticed this phrase on Jeff Linscott’s Web site on the descendants of John Linscott at www.pivot.net/~jlinscott/home.htm. (Click on Immigrant Ancestor.)

There are countless Linscott descendants in Maine, given that John was in York prior to 1700. First, he married Lydia Milbury, and then he married widow Sarah Brookings.

By 1790, there were Linscott, Linscutt and other variations of the name in towns such as Bristol, Brunswick, Francisborough (Cornish), Harpswell, Little Falls (Hollis, Dayton and part of Limington), Sanford and York.

The 10th annual, and possibly the last, Linscott Family Picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, at Lake St. George Park, Route 3, Liberty.

Bring your own picnic. There is an admission charge to the state park, which opens at 9 a.m. The reunion starts whenever the first guest arrives.

There will be Linscott memorabilia, photo albums, copies of The Linscott Herald newsletter and several Linscott Family History manuscripts to view.

Organizer Jeff Linscott is moving to Virginia in October, so this will be the last time he can host the event. For information, contact Linscott at 445-3970 or jlinscott@pivot.net.

The 138th Kalloch Family Reunion will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Old Town House in Union. The hall is handicapped-accessible and has kitchen and bathroom facilities.

This is an active group with knowledgeable researchers. Do check out their genealogy information.

The Scottish Kalloch family, said to be from the old kingdom of Dalriada, has had its name spelled any number of ways, including MacKellaigh, MacKellaig and Kellough.

Robert and Margaret (Finley) Killough came with sons Allen, Finley and John in 1718 from Antrim, Northern Ireland, to Boston. They moved to Freetown, now Asonet.

Finley was a first settler of the Upper Settlement of St. Georges, now Warren.

The registration deadline for the reunion is Friday, Aug. 6.

The buffet lunch is $14 for adults and teenagers, $7 for children 12 and younger, free for 5 and younger.

Send registration to Evelyn Kalloch, P.O. Box 124, Thomaston 04861. Include your address, telephone and e-mail.

There will be an afternoon auction of items such as two fancy cakes made by President Julia Hunter. You may bring items or send them to her at P.O. Box 74, West Rockport 04865. For information, check out the Kalloch Family Association Web site at http://www.kalloch.org.

The descendants of Mary and Walter Lovell of Kingsbury and Abbot will hold a family reunion Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Guilford Center Grange Hall. There will be a potluck lunch, brief business meeting, sharing of genealogy, “mystery photo” table, games and socializing. For information, contact Estella Bennett at 876-3073.

The annual Shorey Reunion will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Amnadamast Grange Hall in Enfield. Lunch will be at 12:30 p.m. Bring a covered dish or dessert and genealogical information on your family.

The 2005 Gray Reunion will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Blue Hill Consolidated School in Blue Hill.

Activities will include a flag presentation by Ramassoc Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a potluck lunch at noon, storytelling by Cordell Gross and George Smith, a ticket table auction, door prizes, photo albums and sales of the new Joshua Gray book and “Sedgwick Vital Records.”

The Mullen Family Reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Mars Hill Community Center in Mars Hill. Surnames connected to the family include Johnson, Gustin, Allen, Ireland, Grass, Griffin, Williams, Kearney, White, Barnes, McPherson, Harmon, York, Robbins, Daley, McDougall, Boulier and Young. Bring stories and photos. For information, contact Lisa Thomas at 942-5898 or lmthomas101@netzero.com.
