Oakfield Railroad Museum slates Railfan Day

From Art Collier we learn that Railfan Day 2005 is much more than just an opportunity to view model trains.

Those of you who read the Houlton Pioneer Times already know Railfan Day is noon-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Oakfield Railroad Museum, located in a restored Victorian railroad station in that Aroostook County community.

But the rest of you need to know you are invited not only to view the museum exhibits and model trains, but also to enjoy live music and attend a baked bean supper from 4 to 6 p.m. hosted by the Oakfield High School Alumni Association.

The cost of the supper is $6 per person.

Part of the extensive model train collection of Oakfield Railroad Museum President Max Lynds will be on display at this event, which is hosted by museum members, OHSAA and the Oakfield Historical Society.

Collier hopes readers will decide to visit Oakfield, and “inspect our best-kept secret,” he wrote, referring to the museum.

Oakfield, located about halfway between Island Falls and Houlton, is easily accessible from Interstate 95.

For information about membership, or about becoming an railroad museum volunteer, call Lynds at 532-2291, ext. 242, or e-mail max@pwless.net.

Sandra Johnson wrote to remind lovers of the free River City Cinema Society Summer Movie Series that it still has one show to go, since its previous “last movie” was canceled because of rain.

“His Girl Friday,” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, “is a great newspaper [of the old days] film,” Johnson wrote of the show that begins at approximately 8:15 tonight, in Pickering Square in downtown Bangor.

On behalf of RCCS members, Johnson extends thanks to “our amazing volunteers who show up, week after week, about 6 p.m., and stay until the last piece of popcorn is swept up.

“We are all thrilled, every Friday, as the Square gradually fills with upwards of 400 folks, with the big screen and the night sky and the outlines of our city buildings around us.”

Here’s something for you to ponder over next week, especially if you’ve been thinking about trying to get in shape.

The Bangor Y has announced it is opening its doors for a two-week, free event from Monday Aug. 22 through Friday, Sept. 2, at both its Bangor locations, to encourage community members to visit the Y and learn about its programs.

During the free “Fit for All” offer, you are invited to try group exercise classes, use its fitness center, try a recreational lap swim, scale the climbing wall, try water exercise classes, participate in swim team clinics, sample creative arts classes and more.

Director of Development and Communications Carrie Anderson-Paquette reports the offer is designed to help enable people “to establish healthy habits” by discovering “more physical activity, finding a creative outlet or spending more family time.”

And Marie Stewart, membership director, adds that the event “is a great way” for people to discover what the Y has to offer.

The Bangor Y Hammond Street facility is open 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays; and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays.

The Bangor Y Second Street facility is open 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For more information about “Fit for All,” call 941-2815 or 941-2808, or visit the Bangor Y Web site, www.bangorY.org.

Dolores Thibodeau of Dedham wrote us to let readers know there are “more good things … happening in this topsy-turvy world” than we hear or read about.

Her son recently “lost an expensive watch” outside Renys in Belfast.”

He called the store with a description of the watch, “just in case it was found,” Thibodeau said.

An employee found the watch and held it for them but “would not take the reward” the family offered when they went to get it.

“She gave me such a genuine hug and said that was enough,” Thibodeau wrote.

“It may not sound like much to some, but it surely gave us the knowledge that there are still warm, honest and loving people all around us.

“May she know how much she meant to us.”
