Medline mouthwash recalled after illness

The following recall has been announced:

Medline-labeled alcohol-free mouthwash, sold by Irving, Texas-based Carrington Labs, is being recalled because it may contain Burkholderia cepacia. Also recalled are Mundelein, Ill.-based Medline Industries Inc. Personal Hygiene Admission kits containing the same alcohol-free mouthwash. There have been two hospital illnesses in two states associated with the mouthwash, which was distributed to hospitals, medical centers and long-term care facilities nationwide.

Burkholderia cepacia, which is often resistant to common antibiotics, poses little risk to healthy people, but those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis may be susceptible to infections.

Besides the bottles in the hygiene kits, 2-ounce Medline label containers with reorder number MDS095029 and 4-ounce Medline label containers with reorder number MDS095030 are being recalled. The bottles also show product lot numbers 0503 through 0508 and identification code RA05CRR.

Customers with the affected product should stop using it and call (800) MEDLINE or visit www.medline.com for details.
