Wellesley alumnae Canada trip open to public

The public is invited to join members of the Wellesley Alumnae in Eastern Maine on a one-day getaway to Canada, reports member Nancy Ziegenbein of Bangor.

The tour leaves at 7 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, from the park and ride lot across from Ramada Inn in Bangor, and the cost is $109 per person.

“We are going to have Sunday brunch at the Algonquin in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea in New Brunswick,” Ziegenbein explained.

Also included is a garden tour of the Kingsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews and a tour of the Ross Memorial Museum, “which will be open, specifically, for this tour,” Ziegenbein said.

The 1800s Georgian mansion features furniture of 19th century New Brunswick craftsmen “and also has exceptional Oriental rugs and objects d’art from around the world,” Ziegenbein said.

Late in the afternoon, you will enjoy High Tea at Kingsbrae Gardens.

“And then, we’re coming back, and we gain an hour, so we will go to the Downeast Heritage Museum in Calais, to learn a little Maine history,” she added.

Proceeds from the tour benefit Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass.

“We still offer admissions that are called aid-blind admissions,” Ziegenbein said.

“When the admissions people go through the applications, they don’t know if the applicants need aid or not. They are admitted, and then they apply for aid. We are one of the few colleges left [in the U.S.] that does that and, also, one of the few women’s colleges left.”

Hammond Street Senior Center artist-in-residence Ellen Beattie has announced that the center’s third annual Art Show will be featured throughout the month of September in the Lecture Hall of Bangor Public Library on Harlow Street.

“Their paintings shine with life experience and scenes that stir beautiful memories,” Beattie wrote of “the wonderfully talented art students” who will be “exhibiting their works of art.”

Since September is the change-over month for library hours, you should clip and save this information if you plan to visit the show.

The Bangor Public Library will be open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2.

The library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 3, through Monday, Sept. 5, and will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when “winter hours” take effect.

The library then will be open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The library is closed Sundays.

Elizabeth Collins of Greenville Junction reports the Moosehead Quilters are hosting their first quilt show, Quilts in the Woods, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at DKB Catering on Pleasant Street in Greenville.

Tea will be available from 1 to 4 p.m. on the veranda and “will feature delicious creations” by DKB owner Diane Bartley.

The show features a door prize, drawings throughout the event, a quilt raffle “and, of course, quilts made by our friends and neighbors,” Collins wrote.

“We have been a busy group since Moosehead Quilters was formed in 2003. We have made fleece mittens for Coats for Kids; we are making Linus quilts; and we are working on a quilt to raffle for charity.”

Colleen Gordon of Brewer wrote us last week after the return of her 14-year-old daughter, who had run away from home.

Gordon wrote that her “heart was broken, my nerves were shot,” and that she “was at my wit’s end.”

She thanks, “with all my heart, the Brewer Police Department for taking this seriously, using all their resources and their time to help find her.”

She also thanks Channel 5 (WABI-TV) and the Bangor Daily News “for getting her picture out to the public, all the radio stations who helped, and the wonderful lady who made the call to bring her home.”

Gordon thanks “everyone for looking for her, their prayers and words of encouragement.

“Thank-you is not nearly enough said,” she added. “You made a mom and family rest at ease. For anyone I forgot, I’m sorry but, again, thank you so much. I hope, if a family ever goes through this, that they will get the great help we did.”
