DOVER-FOXCROFT – A Dover-Foxcroft man who was charged in April with cruelty to animals was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly violating conditions of release.

Mark Hagelin, 45, of Gray Hill Road was taken directly to Piscataquis County Jail, where he remains under a suicide watch.

Hagelin and his father, Burton Hagelin Sr., 73, were each charged with cruelty to animals in April after 92 English springer spaniels were seized at their home and kennel. Authorities said little food or water was available for the animals.

The dogs later were turned over to various animal welfare agencies, and the majority have since been adopted.

Pending their jury trials on the cruelty to animals charges, the men were released with the condition that they remain 10 feet away from any dog other than Apple’s Dumplin, a personal pet of Carol Hagelin, wife of Burton Hagelin Sr. and mother of Mark Hagelin.

The conditions also applied to the five puppies that recently were delivered by Carol Hagelin’s dog.

Because the younger Hagelin had been threatening suicide in e-mails to acquaintances this week, Dover-Foxcroft police Officer Dave Wilson was sent Tuesday night to check on his well-being.

Although Wilson could see Hagelin behind his door window, Hagelin did not answer the door, according to Dover-Foxcroft Police Chief Dennis Dyer. Wilson also observed the puppies, he said.

A search warrant was executed Wednesday afternoon at the Hagelins’ home when police observed Mark Hagelin leave his bedroom with a puppy behind him, according to Dyer.

Carol Hagelin was home at the time of the search, but she told police that Burton Hagelin Sr. had moved out and was living in a motel, the police chief said.

The puppies, which appeared to be well-fed and healthy, were left with Carol Hagelin.

Hagelin’s bail was set at $300 cash. If he posts bail, his initial court appearance on the latest charge will be Oct. 17. If he is unable to post bail, he is expected to be in court next Monday.
