Cake breaks Labor Day course mark

BANGOR – He was breaking a course record, and he wasn’t even aware of it.

After winning the 43rd annual Bangor Labor Day 5-miler and setting a course record of 25 minutes, 30 seconds, Judson Cake of Bar Harbor asked, “what’s the course record?”

Cake was a bit perplexed because in the 43 years that the race has winded through the Queen City, three different courses have been used.

And the course record that Cake shattered Monday was set in 2000 by Jamie LaChance (26:13).

“I thought the course record was 24:50 or something,” said the 28-year-old Cake. “It must’ve been a different course.”

The course changed in 1997 and now starts and finishes on Main Street near the Bangor Parks and Recreation building. The traditional course went up Dutton Street and finished on the Bass Park harness racing oval.

Andy Goupee, a former Brewer High standout runner, finished second in 26:55. Former UMaine and Bangor star Adam Goode was third (27:16), followed by ex-UMaine runner Jeff Caron of Auburn (27:54) and 2003 race champ Phil LeBreton of Bangor (28:15) to round out the top five.

Stillwater’s Cassie Hintz, 17, ran away with the women’s race, despite missing a turn between miles two and three. She finished in 29:36 and was sixth overall.

Coming in second was MDI running coach and teacher Kate McGuire in 33:24, followed by Bangor High running coach Pattie Craig in third (34:54). Margaret Jones of Bucksport wound up fourth (35:25) and Mary Parsons of Hampden was fifth (35:45).

In the men’s race, Cake won his third 5-miler in as many weeks (Machias, Northeast Harbor), but in this race he was running alone almost the whole way.

“It’s a little hard pushing yourself out there by yourself,” he said. “In Machias Evan Graves and Mike Bunker were there to help push me along.”

Cake knows that even though the start of the race is fast, that middle mile is what wins and loses the race.

“I guess I just relaxed in that third mile, I knew it was gonna be slow,” he said. “I figured that into my whole [race] plan and just relaxed up the hill, then pushed down [miles] four and five.”

Right now, Cake’s training is focused on the MDI Marathon in five weeks, and he feels as if he’s ready.

“I’ve got five weeks until MDI, my training is all in the bank,” he said. “I can basically sit around for 5 weeks and I’ll be good to go.”

In the women’s race, Hintz claimed that she was “mad at herself” for missing the turn by the trail in the third mile, but shook it off and kept on trucking along.

“That added about a minute at least,” said Hintz, who is not running for the Old Town High School cross country team this season. “I’m kind of mad at myself for missing the turn, but it’s OK, it happens.

“I worked on passing the people that I could see in front of me,” she added. “I think I ran that last mile in like 5:20, so I’m happy.”

Hintz, like Cake, has burned up the local road race circuit this summer, and if there’s a race within an hour’s drive of her hometown, she’ll be there.

“I just do whatever is on the schedule, whatever is around,” she said.

Hintz said that she’ll be running at the Run for Hope 5K, the former Terry Fox run, in Bangor next weekend.

Hintz’s mother, Marilyn, was 41st overall in 36:05 and came in first in her age group.

Three area running coaches all finished in the top 20: Bucksport’s Chris Jones (30:09, ninth), Brewer High’s Glendon Rand (29:45, eighth) and Brewer Middle School’s Glen Holyoke (20th, 32:47).

In all, 124 runners finished the race.

Traditionally, a bib number is retired every year, and this year, bib No. 10 was hung up in honor of Gerry Clapper of Bucksport, a former UMaine standout.

“It’s definitely an honor [to have a number retired,” he said at the awards ceremony.

Clapper set a Bangor Labor Day course record in 1988 of 24:22 on the traditional course, which was certified.
