BANGOR – Too many scoring options, too much depth and too much experience.

That was what the Brewer girls soccer team had to contend with in facing Bangor on Tuesday night at the high school field.

It was all a little too much for the Witches to overcome as the Rams, guided by first-year coach Larry Smith and powered by junior Erin MacDermott’s hat trick, beat their cross-river rivals 7-0 in their home opener.

Junior Caitlyn Smith came off the bench to add two second-half goals for Bangor, which was coming off a 1-0 win over Lawrence of Fairfield on Saturday.

MacDermott had the assist on Saturday’s goal, scored by senior Jessie Roberts. Roberts helped MacDermott for the second of her three goals Tuesday.

Roberts also assisted on a goal by senior Serena Dubois, who set up MacDermott’s opening score.

“Twice [Bangor] came into the [penalty area] and scored in the first half,” Brewer coach Bill Schwarz said. “They got inside their man, the ball was crossed. … You keep crossing, keep crossing, eventually you’re going to get a goal.”

Sophomore Amy Hackett also had a goal, with senior Hannah Bennett providing the assist. That’s six players figuring into the offense.

“It helps out a lot,” MacDermott said. “We have a very deep team. We can be rotated out and not worry about a second line. Everyone plays and they all step up.”

MacDermott found success by keeping the ball on the ground. The Rams chipped several shots over the goal early.

“I think we just realized that they were really packing the 18 [yard line] with their defenders and midfielders, and it was hard for the front line to get through,” MacDermott said. “At first we were shooting from far away, but one-touches inside the 18 were what really helped us out.”

Bangor racked up 34 shots, 17 of which were saved by Brewer sophomore Carolyn Tuck.

Smith’s goals came 38 seconds apart.

The Rams had a simple strategy to control the midfield – win balls and keep possession. And Bangor kept the 0-2 Witches from making second passes on the few balls Brewer was able to gain.

Bangor senior Ilyse Angst made three saves on three shots, including a boot by Brewer senior Katie Quimby that Angst gripped with her fingers.

“We had a couple of scares,” said Bangor junior defender Emily Heath, “but if a person got by us our defense was good at tracking them down and getting the ball out of there.”
