Police charge man seen wearing missing clothes

A Bangor woman who reported to police that a bag of clothing had been stolen from her car returned to the police station Monday claiming that she saw a man in Pickering Square wearing what appeared to be her clothes.

Officer Rob Angelo accompanied the woman to Pickering Square, where she pointed out the man, identified as Craig Raymond, 35, of Veazie.

Raymond told the officer that he found the clothes on Columbia Street, which is where the woman said her car had been parked, according to Angelo’s police report. Raymond was charged with receiving stolen property and violating bail conditions.

In speaking to Raymond, the officer smelled alcohol on him, the report stated. Raymond had bail conditions that stipulated he not use alcohol. Angelo then asked Raymond to take an Intoxilyzer test, which he failed, and the officer added the charge of violating bail conditions.

Most of the clothes were recovered and returned to the woman.

Brewer police have charged a local man with arson, terrorizing and disorderly conduct for an incident Monday during which he reportedly destroyed property at his residence, started a small fire inside and threatened two family members.

Sgt. Chris Martin said Tuesday that Henry Welna, 47, had not been taking his medications when he began acting violently shortly after 7 p.m. Monday inside his home on Goupee Street.

Police initially responded to a report of a fire, but it had been extinguished by the time officers arrived, Martin said, adding that little damage occurred as a result of the fire.

After speaking with witnesses and surveying the damage to the residence, police took Welna into custody. Police first took him to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for a psychiatric evaluation and then to Penobscot County Jail.

The investigation into the fire is continuing, Martin said, but there was enough evidence Monday to charge Welna with arson.
