McAvoy lifts Cougars past Fort Fairfield 5-0

FORT FAIRFIELD – Alex McAvoy scored two goals, one in each half, to lead the Katahdin Cougars of Stacyville to a 5-0 win over the Fort Fairfield Tigers in Class D schoolboy soccer action Monday.

McAvoy was assisted by Cameron Cunningham and Ethan Qualey. Marshall Davis, Patrick Willette and Andy Kay each added a goal in the second half.

Burton Brail had six saves on nine shots for 5-1-1 Katahdin. Billy Scull and Austin Dufour combined for 14 saves on 27 shots for 7-3 Fort Fairfield.

Madawaska 8, Wisdom 0

At St. Agatha, Matt Beaulieu, Matt Bosse and Tyler Levesque each scored two goals to lead Madawaska to victory.

Billy Roy and Shawn Parker added a goal each for the winners.

Chad Bouchard had two saves on four shots for the 10-1-1 Owls. Curtis Collins saved 10 of 37 shots for 0-10 Wisdom.

Ellsworth 3, Caribou 2

At Ellsworth, Chris Leighton beat a couple of defenders and tucked an 18-yard shot inside the near post with 30:27 remaining to break a 2-2 tie and give the Eagles their first win. Ellsworth is now 1-3.

Dimitrios Katsiaficas and Chris Baez scored the other goals and Leighton had an assist. Cory Smith finished with 10 saves.

Caleb Rosser and Kyle Corrigan scored for 4-3-1 Caribou and Ken Rosser had an assist. Brad Ala finished with six saves.

Woodland 4, Washington Acad. 1

At Woodland, Brandon Tomah scored two goals and assisted on another as the Dragons beat the Raiders.

Tomah scored off a Cody Sappier assist in the first half, 19 seconds after Julian Washington’s unassisted goal for Washington Academy of East Machias. He added a second-half goal on a penalty kick.

Chad James scored two second-half goals off assists from Jeremy Burke and Tomah for 4-0 Woodland. Craig Moody made 11 saves on 12 shots.

Josiah Jackson made 19 saves on 23 shots for the 2-3 Raiders.

Shead 10, Jonesport-Beals 4

At Jonesport, Aaron Sullivan scored three goals and Mike Cummings and Cody Bulmer scored two apiece as Shead of Eastport picked up its first win after four losses.

Chris Newman, A.J. Seeley and Justin Lewey had the other goals for Shead and Dana Mitchell made four saves on 19 shots.

Jonathan Alley scored twice for 0-4 Jonesport-Beals with Mike Smith and Derek Leach getting the others. Ben Ellis made nine saves on 15 shots and Scott Smorch had four stops on 10 shots.

DI-Stonington 3, Sumner 0

At Deer Isle, Max Becton had two goals and Brian Ciomei two assists as the Mariners prevailed.

Parker McDonald added a goal and Colin Ciomei an assist for 2-3 Deer Isle-Stonington. Eben Powers had 18 saves on 19 shots.

Mason Young stopped 16 out of 25 shots for the East Sullivan-based Tigers, now 0-5.

PVHS 5, Penquis 2

At Howland, Matt Cummings scored two of his three goals in the first half as the Penobscot Valley Howlers took a 4-2 lead en route to their first victory.

Ryan Ware added a goal off a direct kick for the 1-4-1 Howlers and Cory Soucy scored off a Nik Hockridge pass. Brian Harris and Chad Trapier combined for 10 saves on 14 shots.

Nathan Allen and Leigh Dolley each scored an unassisted goal for the 1-5 Patriots of Milo and Nick Emery made 29 saves on 38 shots.

Orono 2, Central 1

At Corinth, Jeff Normand and Chris McConnon scored unassisted goals 16 minutes apart in the first half as the Red Riots edged Central.

Mat Lint had 13 saves on 18 shots for 4-0-1 Orono.

Scott Kelly scored for the 3-2 Red Devils with Tyler Seed getting the assist. Charles Haney stopped nine out of 15 shots.

JV: Orono 2-0

Girls soccer

Fort Fairfield 3, Katahdin 0

At Fort Fairfield, Sheena Esancy scored two goals in the second half to help lead Fort Fairfield to victory.

Esancy’s goals were assisted by Sadie Ayoob and Caitlyn McLaughlin. Rosemary Williams added a goal off a corner kick with an assist from Kelsey Towle.

Lauren Beckwith stopped three of five shots for the 8-1-2 Tigers. Kayla Stevens had 12 saves on 16 shots for 0-5-1 Katahdin.

Ellsworth 2, Caribou 0

At Ellsworth, Lauren Peer scored one goal and assisted on another by Maggie Harding, all in the first half, as the Eagles blanked the Vikings.

Catie Cravens had six saves on seven shots for 4-1-1 Ellsworth.

Billie Martin stopped 15 out of 25 shots for 2-5 Caribou.

JV: Ellsworth 3-0

Camden Hills 2, Belfast 0

At Rockport, Kayla Gushee knocked in two goals, one of which was assisted by Lexi Coleman as the Windjammers blanked Belfast.

Jessie Colson had three saves on seven shots for 5-1 Camden Hills while Katherine Kelly blocked six out of 10 shots for the 4-2 Lions.
