Woman leaves $1M to Morse High School

BATH – A 90-year-old woman who died in July has left at least $1 million to her alma mater, Morse High School.

Muriel McCaffrey died July 15 at her home in Woolwich.

Though she kept in touch with school trustees over the years, no one knew the extent of her fortune.

“It was like a bolt out of the blue,” said Lloyd Coombs, president of the board of trustees for the Morse High School Scholarship Fund and Woolwich town administrator.

“In all my contact with her, I never had an inkling that I was talking to a multimillionaire. She was very modest and unassuming,” he said.

McCaffrey’s gift is believed to be the largest donation ever made to the high school’s scholarship fund. The amount may reach $1.5 million when her estate is settled.

The money will be awarded to Morse students going on to higher education.
